The World Coalition for Equity and Diversity in Education (WCEDE) recognizes the gravity of the global Covid-19 (Coronavirus) crisis. WCEDE is especially conscious of the manner in which this deadly virus has transcended all boundaries between peoples and therefore disproportionately affects those for whom healthcare remains severely under-resourced. WCEDE, an international body of educational organizations, scholars, practitioners and activists focused on equity and diversity, is fully committed to the attainment of social justice and fully understands the interconnections between education and all other aspects of society. Global health remains vital for the future wellbeing of all citizens and WCEDE acknowledges the persistence of the relationship between educational inequalities and health inequalities. The recognition of diversity among and between peoples and the injustices which arise from the unequal distribution of resources challenge both educational and healthcare providers to achieve greater equity. We are sensitive to the generation of hatred towards specific groups and individuals. Consequently, in this current global climate of fear and anxiety, we call on every country and community to challenge all forms of xenophobia particularly against peoples of Asian descent.
All those involved with the WCEDE are reflecting on what the most appropriate educational response is regarding the many societal impacts of Covid-19, and will be constantly engaged in translating our reflections into concrete educational actions. Meanwhile, WCEDE fully supports the efforts of those working at all levels to rid the world of this deadly disease.
