The WCEDE was established in recognition that various equity and diversity in education associations are often geographically bound. The WCEDE seeks common ground on issues of equity and diversity as well as provides a network for mutual and collaborative learning thereby benefiting the respective associations. It recognizes that the most important issues impacting equity and diversity in education are not domestic/regional problems but rather are global. As such, the WCEDE supports and facilitates a global, social justice approach to education.

The WCEDE and its constituent member organizations aim to work together through international and reciprocal collaborations for the purpose of building a global movement to advance research, curriculum, pedagogy, policies, and practices that promote equity, social justice and human rights in education in ways that honor multiple and intersectional dimensions of human diversity. Related purposes include the following:
Broadening and expanding understandings of diversity and equity in education by considering the interplay among local, national, and global contexts;
Facilitating and supporting dialogue on educational policies, and practices related to diversity and equity in education globally;
