GLMA Congratulates AMA President-Elect Jesse Ehrenfeld, To Be First Openly Gay AMA President-Elect

On June 14, 2022, anesthesiologist Jesse Ehrenfeld, MD, MPH, was elected president-elect of the American Medical Association (AMA). Following a year-long term as president-elect, Dr. Ehrenfeld will be installed as AMA president in June 2023. GLMA President Nick Grant, PhD, ABPP, and GLMA Executive Director Hector Vargas, JD, issued this statement:

“GLMA congratulates Jesse Ehrenfeld, MD, MPH, on his historic election as president-elect of the American Medical Association. Dr. Ehrenfeld’s election as the first openly gay president-elect of the AMA is more than a milestone. For the AMA to be led by a physician who is not just openly LGBTQ+ but who has made advocacy for our community a cornerstone of his career is a groundbreaking achievement not just for Dr. Ehrenfeld but also for LGBTQ+ healthcare professionals and allies who have worked over many years to ensure associations are responsive to the LGBTQ+ community.

“GLMA has been proud to work with Dr. Ehrenfeld and many other dedicated physicians to support the AMA’s remarkable growth and evolution on LGBTQ+ health since the AMA Advisory Committee on LGBTQ Issues was initiated nearly 20 years ago.

“Dr. Ehrenfeld’s long involvement with GLMA, his research on patient outcomes and health equity, and his advocacy—notably his testimony before the US House Armed Services Committee in favor of lifting the ban on transgender service members—earned him a GLMA Achievement Award in 2018. We look forward to continuing our collaboration with the AMA to advance LGBTQ+ health equity under Jesse Ehrenfeld’s leadership.”
