Past President, Julie Ellis, Honored by Memphis Business Journal

Butler Snow attorney Julie H. Ellis was recently awarded the 2017 Best of the Bar Awards from the Memphis Business Journal. Ellis was presented the award on March 7 at the Opera Memphis.

The Best of the Bar Awards honor top legal minds in the Memphis area, whether they are in a private firm, serve as an attorney for the government, or work as in-house counsel for a company.  Winners are selected by a panel of judges and weighed based on legal excellence in service to their firm, organization or company; service to their profession; and community involvement.

Ellis, a member of Butler Snow’s Government, Environmental and Energy Group, was awarded in the large private firm category. She focuses her practice on administrative law and government relations.  She is AV-Rated by Martindale-Hubbell and has been awarded the AV Preeminent ranking in Transportation Law.  Ellis is a past president of the board of directors and advisors for the International Aviation Women’s Association.

Ellis regularly consults with major airlines and airports on aviation international environmental issues and airport access issues.  She has represented airlines, airmen and aircraft owners in Federal Aviation Administration enforcement proceedings and licensing issues, airline certifications for both new and established carriers, airport agreements, and repair station certifications.  She also represents trucking companies on various regulatory matters.

Ellis previously served as the Cargo Industry Advisor to the U.S. Government Delegation to the ICA CAEP and served in an instrumental role in the authoring and securing congressional passage of the Airport Noise and Capacity Act of 1990.  She was a lead author of the Climate Change Technical Working Group report to Policymakers of the IPCC, which assessed transportations’ impact on the global atmosphere, and was a co-author of the Metropolitan Charter for Shelby County and the City of Memphis.

Prior to joining Butler Snow, Ellis was a Managing Director and Senior Attorney at Federal Express Corporation.   She completed her undergraduate education in economics at Randolph College, formerly Randolph-Macon Woman’s College, where she now serves on the Board of Trustees. Ellis earned her Juris Doctor at the University of Florida.
